There are so many gorgeous shades of skin out there. From porcelain to mocha and every other shade, we love them all.

The reality is, not everyone is happy with their skin. It’s too dark, too blotchy or a canvas of scars left from acne, hyperpigmentation or simply years of overexposure to the sun.

For these reasons and many more, people often look to skin lightening as a solution.

As you can imagine, there are tons of skin lightening products on the market, but most are chock full of harsh chemicals and bleaching agents that can actually damage your skin further.

If you are like us, you don’t want to leave your skin care to chance, you’d rather ere on the side of caution and go naturally. But first, let’s dish about what skin lightening is and set a few things straight.

What is Skin Lightening?

You may think that skin lightening is exactly as the name suggests – the process of lightening your skin. This is somewhat misleading because skin lightening is so much more than that.

So exactly what is skin lightening?

Skin lightening is a depigmentation process as well as a skin brightening treatment. By brightening, we mean clearer, more even complexions with less of those noticeable “flaws.”

Just to be clear, skin lightening is not the same as bleaching your skin.

Skin bleaching is the use of super harsh chemicals (like bleach itself) to whiten your skin.

Why Would You Use Skin Lightening

There are many reasons why someone would try skin lightening. Over the years we have found that most people do it because they are unhappy with their skin tone. Sun exposure, age and lifestyle has made it look uneven, dull and lifeless.

Others try it because they don’t like their freckles or age spots or suffer from other types of hyperpigmentation.

Another common reason is they want to reduce the appearance of stretch marks or scars. Acne scars or ones form injuries as well as stretch marks can be treated using skin lightening remedies.

Why You Should Use Natural Skin Lightening Methods

Did you know that one of the most common ingredients in store bought skin lightening products is mercury?

Mercury is a toxic substance that builds up in your body over time and can lead to serious health issues. Excess mercury damages your brain, lungs and kidneys and can cause impaired sight, hearing and speech.

Natural skin lightening methods obviously do not contain this toxic ingredient, which is why we strongly suggest going au natural.

Natural Skin Lightening Remedies

If you are interested in homemade skin lightening remedies then look no further. We have whipped together a list of some of our favourite all natural skin lightening recipes. Each one is 100% natural, budget friendly and actually works.

Quick sidebar – natural skin lightening does require some patience. You will not likely notice results over night. Within 6 weeks of regular use you should see a noticeable difference.

Yogurt + Lemon Skin Lightening Night Cream

You will need:

  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 1/2 freshly squeezed lemon
  • 3-5 drops lavender essential oil

Step One

In a bowl, mix together all of your ingredients. Give it 5 minutes to settle together.

Step Two

After cleaning your face with a mild facial cleanser, slather your DIY skin lightening cream all over your face. Just don’t get any in your eyes.

Step Three

This is safe to leave on overnight, otherwise let it soak in for 30 minutes. Either way, rinse off with warm water and no soap. Pat your face dry with a clean towel before applying moisturizer.

Why This Works

Yogurt and lemon are both natural skin lightening agents. They are rich with lactic acid, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and vitamin C that work to slough away dull and damaged skin to reveal brighter, more even skin.

Lavender oil on the other hand, is a great moisturizer for your skin and hydrated skin is essential if you want it to look healthier.

Coconut Milk + Honey + Lemon Skin Lightening Body Cream

You will need:

  • 1 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup raw, organic honey (local honey is best if you can find it)

Step One

Mix all of your ingredients in a bowl or bottle.

Step Two

Hop in the bath or shower and then apply the cream all over your skin. Avoid any sensitive or intimate areas. Massage it in using gentle circular motions.

Step Three

Let this skin lightening body cream soak in for 10 minutes before rinsing off.

Repeat this 3-4 times weekly for best results.

Why This Works

Lemon is one of nature’s greatest lightening agents. It is also full of vitamin C that helps rejuvenate dull looking skin by promoting cellular regeneration and exfoliating dead skin cells away.

Coconut milk is copper-rich, a mineral that helps prevent the signs of aging like saggy skin, wrinkles, or in this case, hyperpigmentation.

Honey is a natural humectant which means it locks moisture deep within your skin so it looks lush and hydrated.

Powdered Orange + Yogurt Skin Lightening Face Mask

You will need:

  • 1 tbsp powdered orange peel (typically takes 2 large, dried oranges to make this)
  • 1 tbsp plain yogurt

Step One

Mix your ingredients together in a small bowl and stir until they form a smooth paste.

Step Two

Slather this paste all over your face and let it soak in for 20 minutes, avoiding contact with eyes and mouth.

Step Three

Rinse off with warm water and repeat as often as every second day. Don’t forget to moisturize afterwards.

Why This Works

Oranges contain vitamin C, which we’ve already mentioned has several skin lightening benefits. It sloughs away dead skin, stimulates cellular regeneration to heal damaged skin and naturally brightens skin.

Yogurt contains lactic acid that also exfoliates away damaged skin, as well as rejuvenating AHA’s.

Coconut Milk + Turmeric Skin Lightening Spot Treatment

You will need:

  • 1 tbsp coconut milk
  • 1/2 tbsp turmeric powder

Step One

In a small dish, mix together your 2 ingredients until it forms a paste.

Step Two

Rub this paste over areas where you particularly struggle from irritating dark spots, or general areas you would like to lighten.

Step Three

Let this paste soak in for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Rinse off with warm water afterwards and apply a moisturizer.

Why This Works

Turmeric has long been used by Indian women as a herbal cosmetic. This spice inhibits the body’s production of melanin, the enzyme responsible for pigmentation.

Coconut milk, as we already mentioned, contains copper which works wonders on preventing age spots and hyperpigmentation.

These are just a few of the many ways you can lighten your skin naturally, but of course there are several others available.

While we heavily focused on DIY home remedies for skin lightening, we do feel compelled to mention one bad ass product that lightens skin without harsh chemicals; Meladerm.

Meladerm helps erase hyperpigmentation and dark spots, while evening out your overall skin tone. Best of all, it does not contain any harmful ingredients. (Learn more about it here!)
