The first time you notice a wrinkle in the mirror can be a very big wakeup call.

If you’re anything like us, that wrinkle made you acutely aware of the fact that you weren’t getting any younger and now was the time to start preventing future wrinkles.

A little preventative damage control can go along way, especially when it comes to maintaining that youthful visage.

And sometimes all it takes is a few tried and true techniques that even your grandma would approve of.

Follow the below anti aging tricks and you’ll be well on your way to looking like a fox well into your 60’s and beyond!

Your Anti Aging Tricks Checklist

#1: Drink Warm Lemon Water in the AM

Lemon is a natural detoxifier that helps flush toxins and junk out of your system. Replacing your morning java with a cup of warm lemon water instead can have so many skin-tastic benefits.

For starters, lemons will invigorate your senses and wake you up in a way you thought only coffee could — but without causing internal inflammation from caffeine.

This morning hit of vitamin C also helps rejuvenate your skin by kicking your collagen production into high gear. Collagen is responsible for keeping your skin smooth and youthful.

#2: Get 8 Hours of Quality Sleep

Yea yea, you’ve heard this before, but we’re going to say it again — you cannot skimp on sleep if you expect to look young.

Sleep is when your body and mind gets to unwind after a busy, stressful day and it’s crucial for reparative damage.

A solid 8 hours will give your body enough time to start repairing damaged skin cells, while also reducing your odds of waking up in the morning with puffy red eyes.

Sleeping on your back instead of your stomach or side can also help you reduce facial lines, so try swapping up your sleeping position and see how it goes.

#3: Eat Your Greens

Leafy green vegetables are full of antioxidants that can ward off free radicals from sun exposure.

Vegetables contain nutrients that naturally reduce inflammation and reduce the signs of aging and irritation in the skin.

Surely you’ve noticed that after days (or weeks) of binge eating crappy foods your skin looks sullen, puffy and likely experiences a breakout or two. By swapping out these junk foods for green foods (think kale, spinach, or broccoli) you will notice results in just a few short days.

Your skin will become clearer, brighter and much more lush.

#4: Stop Drinking From Straws

Straws may be cute and fun and help you maintain that gorgeous lip stain, but they can also be causing wrinkling around your mouth.

Constant puckering of your lips to sip through a straw can cause fine lines because you are repetitively stretching and snapping back the skin in that area. This can tax your skin’s elastin and lead to wrinkles.

Instead of drinking from straws, we suggest you grab yourself a semi-permanent lipstick shade and sip right from the glass instead.

#5: Bath with Chemical Free Body Washes and Soaps

When was the last time you read the ingredients in your favourite body wash? With so many gorgeous scents to choose from, we can’t blame you for forgoing the ingredient list and choosing that succulent vanilla bean body wash.

However, you may want to flip that bottle around and look out for harmful ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate (the ingredient that makes soaps and washes foamy) and parabens.

Parabens are a common preservative used in cosmetic products that have been found to cause cancer.

DIY your body wash or look for one that is paraben and sulfate free instead.

#6: Exfoliate Regularly

It seems that face cloths have become a thing of the past, replaced by fancy scrubs, expensive loofahs and exfoliation devices.

What you may not know is that grandma knew what was up.

Another anti aging trick is to use a textured washcloth. These offer super gentle exfoliation that helps shed your skin of dead skin cells that can be making your skin look dull.

When used daily, and followed up with a good moisturizer, you will begin to notice a new glow to your skin.  You may even notice that fine lines around your eyes and forehead wrinkles are slowly disappearing.

#7: Moisturize Daily

Your skin is made up of over 60% water so it goes without saying that it needs to be hydrated in order to look fresh and youthful.

Moisturizing daily helps you give your skin the hydration it needs in order to stay strong, healthy and firm.

When your skin is not getting enough moisture it will become dry, lack-lustre and add years to your appearance.

Some of our favourite moisturizers are as simple as plain old coconut or jojoba oil. Just slather it all over your body after your shower and enjoy the benefits.

If you’re looking for a more rich moisturizer, try blending coconut oil with shea butter or vitamin E capsules.

To further benefit your anti-aging process, always apply your moisturizer in an upward motion, especially around your chest, neck and face. This helps in the good fight against gravity. May sound silly, but you’ll thank us later.

#8: It’s Never Too Early to Use Eye Cream

Even if you don’t have crow’s feet or under eye wrinkles yet, it’s never too early to start using eye cream. (But if you do, learn more on how to get rid of those eye wrinkles here!)

In fact it could be your best preventative measure yet.

Eye creams containing glycerin, hyaluronic acid, retinoids and SPF protection are your best bet. Not only do they keep your skin hydrated and lush, but they help cellular regeneration so your skin is always strong and fresh.

It doesn’t take a fancy solution to prevent eye wrinkles either. Your eye cream could be as simple as beeswax and vitamin E oil or coconut oil mixed together.

#9: Less Is More When it Comes to Makeup

You may think that layer on the makeup is helping you look younger, but the truth is it’s often quite the opposite.

Too much makeup can actually draw attention to current fine lines and wrinkles. If you buy lower quality makeup, it can also dehydrate your skin and damaging it in the long run.

Now, we’re all for wearing makeup, but taking a minimalist approach is best and quality really does trump all.

When choosing foundations, look for one that contains moisturizer. Avoid over apply blush or eyeshadow that can suck the moisture from your skin and always remember to wash your face before going to bed.
